Teaching Artist | Documentary Photographer | Director | Collaborator
My name is Jen May Pastores and I’m a documentary photographer living in Visalia, California. I’m recognized internationally for the photography work I did with Tiny Toones Cambodia in Phnom Pehn. “The World Through Our Eyes” photography exhibit helped raise awareness for the youth countering the stereotypes of artistic and emotional desolation in the developing world. It featured the learning process of classroom workshops that I designed and implemented with over 50 youth participants resulting in an exhibit of our work at the Meta House, Cambodia’s first first media/art/communication center.
I’m a grant recipient of the Visual Artists Network and collaborated with the Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia, PA as an Artist-in-Residence where I worked with youth in their community and exhibited work in their gallery. I’ve presented for the Philadelphia Conference of Photojournalists, have been a featured artist for Hawaii’s Girl Fest (an annual anti-violence festival), and have had work exhibited locally on an on-going basis.
I facilitate classes for the My Voice Media Center with Visalia’s Arts Consortium where I help individuals of Mental Healthcare experience tell their story and realize their own creative vision. I lead a group of over 200 photographers known as Visalia Lens, organize Help-Portrait events to give back in our community, and travel extensively to document cultural events. The furthest destination wedding I’ve documented was in Vigan, Philippines. Every year I also participate as a Thirst Relief Mentor to help raise awareness and funds for clean water.
My other passions include developing engaging out-of-school time programming for youth in the Central Valley with Pro-Youth/HEART, and I’m a proud award recipient for Innovative Enrichment from the Tulare County Office of Education. More importantly, I’m down-to-earth, so hashtag with me #livetolove!
My goal is to inspire ideas, document your story, and to give you an enjoyable experience with photography! Some things I enjoy: making crafty things, reading, traveling, music, bowls of hot noodles, getting people together, creative writing, family, and following Jesus.
